MONTANA, HORSES & MOHAIR
My name is Skye Ogilvie and I am the creative cowgirl behind Cielo Cinches. I grew up in Western Montana where horses were my families’ livelihood. My father, Alec Ogilvie, is a Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee. My mother, Claudia, rode broncs in her early days and trained barrel horses. Riding was and still is an everyday part of my life, whether it’s in the arena or on the trail.
In 1994 and with the assistance of my friend, Rebecca Morgan-Albertson, I built my first cinch. I was only a teenager, but I fell in love with mohair back then. Some 17 years later I was approached by Rebecca to film her cinch making DVD. By the time filming was complete I had made up my mind, custom cinch making is what I wanted to pursue.
My sister, Blue, begged me to build her a mohair breast collar and I resisted, thinking of the big, bulky mohair-blend breast collars popular in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. Being a leather-loving girl, I wondered why anyone would want such an unattractive thing on their horse. I’m glad I listened to her because now I absolutely love mohair breast collars—not only the finished product but the amount of creativity that goes into each piece.
I build custom breast collars and cinches for NFR qualifiers and Quarter Horse World finalists, to everyday working cowboys. I believe every horse and rider deserves comfortable, well-fitting gear that expresses their personality and benefits their horsemanship journey….gear I would be proud to ride with every day.
